  • The honour guard stands to attention aboard the Chinese Naval assault ship Chang Bai Shan at Portsmouth Royal Navy Base today. The ship is involved in the first visit by the Chinese Navy to the UK since 2007 and the largest ever. She is accompanied by the frigate Yun Cheng and the replenishment ship Chaohu. The ships arrived in Portsmouth 24 hours early due to the expected bad weather. The Royal Navy statement stated that the five day formal visit is aimed at enhancing military understanding between the UK and China. Picture date Monday 12th January, 2015.<br />

  • Intrepid centenarian Doris Long MBE waves before abseiling down the 130 metre tall Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth today, on her 100th Birthday. She performed the feat to raise funds for local charity, The Rowans Hospice and it is her 15th abseil. Daring Doris took up abseiling at 85 and today broke her own record of being the oldest person to abseil. Picture date Sunday 18th May, 2014.<br />

  • Holocaust survivor Simon Gronowski, 86 is applauded by actors and the audience at Chichester Cathedral following a moving performance of PUSH, A Holocaust Opera, staged at the cathedral on International Holocaust Memorial Day.<br />
PUSH, composed by internationally-renowned conductor Howard Moody (left) tells Gronowski's incredible true story of being pushed by his mother from a train bound for the infamous Nazi concentration camp of Auschwitz in 1943 when the locomotive was ambushed by Belgian Resistance fighters. Simon escaped and was hidden away by the local population and lived to tell his remarkable tale, but his mother and sister both died in the gas chambers.<br />
A community choir of over one hundred, including adults from local societies and children from six Sussex schools, as well as musicians from the University of Chichester Chamber Orchestra performed the piece.<br />

  • Dorset Fire Fighter Matt Norman and Crew Manager Nick Corben on Canford Heath in Poole damping down hotspots left after a wildfire destroyed a large area of the heath. Around 100 people evacuated from their homes have now been allowed to return. Twenty-five fire engines and 12 Land Rovers were involved in the battle last night to get the blaze under control.

  • English Heritage staff at Apsley House prepare to display the Duke of Wellington's Prussian dinner service which was commissioned in 1817 by King Frederick William III of Prussia to honour the 1st Duke of Wellington. The display will include 34 dessert plates (pictured), each showing a place or event connected to the Duke’s life and will be displayed chronologically around the table in the Waterloo Gallery at the property in Piccadilly. The service has been on display at Apsley in the Museum Room, however, this will be the first time it will be displayed on a table for the public to see. This year is also the 200th anniversary of the dinner service being commissioned. There will also be other items from the service on display, including fruit comports and baskets, wine coolers, ice-cream pails, vases, soup tureens, candelabra and decorative statues. Many of these items are painted with scenes of the Duke’s life including the two large vases that show the battle of Waterloo and Vitoria.<br />

Tracy Edwards MBE and crew reunited with Maiden 27 years after sailing into the history books. Maiden and her all-female crew competed in the Whitbread Round The World Race in 1989/90 winning two legs and coming second overall. Over the next 12 months, Maiden will be restored in Hamble near Southampton. She will then sail around the world as an ambassador for the Maiden Factor, to promote access to education for girls.<br />
