High access worker Olly Laker steps out onto a cross beam of the Spinnaker Tower, some 90 metres above Portsmouth Harbour. When completed the 170 metre tall tower will be the highest publicly accessible building in the UK outside London offering staggering views of the city and the Isle of Wight. 201 km of steel have been used in the construction which would stretch twice around the island; and foundation piles bored into the sea bed reach 50 metres deep, the height of Nelson's Column. The 100 metre viewing area will feature a glass floor section for visitors to look down and appreciate it's architecture. It will boast an external glass lift plus a conventional internal elevator. Should they break down for any reason visitors will have to walk down 560 steps inside one of the two legs. The tower which bears a resemblence to the famous Burj Al Arab Hotel in Dubai was originally planned as a millennium project and will open after years of setbacks and financial wranglings.
